Classroom & Curriculum Information

CURRICULUM NIGHT:

Here is a link to our Youtube video for all pertinent information regarding 6th grade curriculum.

Reading Passport

--The reading passport is a year-long process that is designed to get your student to read a variety of novels at their reading level.

--There are 8 genres represented:  historical fiction, realistic fiction, sports fiction, mystery, biography, drama, fantasy and science fiction.  Students will receive a sticker for reading a genre and filling out a reading passport sheet.

--The reading passport sheets are meant to be completed during school in our literacy block.  We do encourage reading 20 minutes at home each night, and sheets may be completed at home, but we do give enough time to complete them at school. --You will notice that nonfiction is not a genre listed.  We still encourage reading non-fiction books, but the passport is designed to for students to read novels.

--You will also notice that graphic novels are not on the list.  This is because graphic novels fall into other categories (realistic fiction, etc.)

--Can my student read audio books?  Yes! They may as long as they follow along with the text and turn in the passport.

--What does my student need to read right now?  By November 7, we ask that all students receive 2 stickers in two different genres.  We will be doing a sixth grade shared reading of “Flying Solo” by Ralph Fletcher and students will receive a third sticker for that.

--This is too much or this is too little!?  Please, always contact your student’s teacher directly so we can work out a plan for success.  This is all about getting our students reading appropriate and interesting books!
