Top 10 Things Every Child Should Know Before Entering Kindergarten

At Rooney Ranch we are committed to providing the very best educational experience for all students. Our staff has collaborated to create classroom structures and develop instructional practices that are familiar to students as they progress from Kindergarten through 6th grade. As a K-6 system, our classrooms use a structure during literacy block called Daily 5.
Beginning in Kindergarten, children are taught specific learning behaviors for five independent, daily reading activities: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing. While students practice the behaviors for each of these five activities, teachers and students monitor their progress toward independence, which we call "stamina." Once most children sustain 15-20 minutes of independence, teachers begin small group reading and writing instruction. This structure is repeated in grades K-6. Using the same structure K-6 allows children to focus on their learning, rather than focusing on a new set of expectations each year.
