Battle of the Books 2020
It is our pleasure to announce that the 5th and 6th grade students from around the district will have the opportunity to participate in a Battle of the Books competition this spring. Battle of the Books is a trivia-based literacy program. Students will read from a list of ten books from different genres and then compete against other teams to answer questions about the books.
This friendly competition will provide opportunities for teams to battle each other within the school and then we will send our TOP TWO teams to a Final Battle between other 5th and 6th grade teams from 30 different schools in the district.
This is an extra-curricular activity; participation is not required. Students who do not participate in Battle of the Books will complete an alternative assignment given by their homeroom teacher, with the same expectations and rigor as the challenge of reading for Battle of the Books.
Battle of the Books teams are made up of three students. Individual teams will decide how they want to cover the book list. Students are encouraged to read all ten books on the book list, but reading a minimum of FIVE books is required to participate. The more students read, the better their team will be able to answer questions during the competition. We have partnered with Jeffco Public Libraries this year and all titles in multiple formats, including audiobooks, are available around the county.
Students should take notes as they read or write chapter summaries to help them remember the details of the books. They will be able to use any notes they take during competition.
Our in-school battle will take place during the week of February 24th. Greater detail will be communicated with parents as we get close to the competition. The final district-level battle will take place the first week in March, schedule and location still pending as we finalize the list of schools committed to the competition.
If your child is interested in competing in the Jeffco Battle of the Books, these are his or her next three steps:

Find two other teammates that are committed to reading and competing in the Battle of the Books.

Come up with a team name. In the past, teams have dressed up for their competition to match their name. This is not required, but it can add to the fun.

Turn in the permission slip that is attached to this letter on or before, Tuesday, October 8th. Each student needs to turn one in with the parent acknowledgement and support of the commitment involved for this program. Their teammates are counting on them!
